Stand back Sex and The City! Step aside Entourage! The latest TV series to have a cinematic spin-off is Downton Abbey.

Just in case 52 episodes with the Crawley family and their faithful servants left you wanting more, the series’ creator, Julian Fellowes, has written a two-hour follow-up, and most of the original cast have been lured back to their very big house in the country. Among them are Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery, and Jim Carter (as Carson the butler), whose wife, Imelda Staunton, joins the roster as the magnificently named Lady Maud Bagshaw.

Do we need another film of Louisa May Alcott’s 19th-Century coming-of-age novel? There have already been seven – including Gillian Armstrong’s 1994 adaptation – and the most recent of those, a modern-day retelling, came out just last year. Still, the new Little Women, written and directed by Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) could be big. Chris Hunneysett at the Daily Mirrorenthuses that “this joyous, moving and funny adaptation of the much-loved literary classic bursts with wit, warmth, beauty and intelligence”. The four March sisters are played by Saoirse Ronan (as Jo), Emma Watson (as Meg), Eliza Scanlen (as Beth), and Florence Pugh (as Amy), and the supporting cast numbers Meryl Streep, Laura Dern and Timothée Chalamet.

It’s been a long wait, but Martin Scorsese has finally made another virtuosic gangster saga with Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, the stars of Goodfellas and Casino. If that weren’t exciting enough, he’s invited along Al Pacino and Harvey Keitel, too. The Irishman is the true story of a mafia hitman (De Niro) who does the bidding of a quietly terrifying Philadelphia godfather (Joe Pesci) and a loud-mouthed union boss (Al Pacino). Opinions are divided on the digital de-ageing, but Linda Marric at HeyUGuys hails Scorsese’s three-and-half-hour masterpiece as “a beautifully precise, intricate and genuinely engaging story”.
